DEBUSSY Fantaisie for Piano and Orchestra

DEBUSSY La Mer

A must-see programme for lovers of Debussy’s music, this concert is a rare opportunity to hear the sparkling Fantaisie, Debussy’s only work for piano and orchestra, alongside his evocative orchestral masterpiece La mer. Sketched from an imagination and ‘countless reminiscences’ that to Debussy, ‘matter more than a reality’, La mer charts the ever-changing face of the sea.

In the first half, Pierre-Laurent Aimard performs three of Boulez’s 1945 Notations for solo piano – tiny but powerful works that express a musical idea in just a few seconds – to pave the way for their orchestral counterparts. These exhilarating ‘magnifications’ were composed decades later for a huge ensemble of 112 players, including eight percussionists. Movements from Debussy’s Images, quoting a Scottish folk song and French nursery rhymes, complete this fascinating programme.
