Music of Today: Karin Rehnqvist
The 35-year-old Richard Strauss caused a sensation with his tone poem 'A Hero's Tale' when it was premièred in 1898, shocking musicians and critics with what was assumed to be an egotistical display of musical autobiography. Since then opinion has been divided - might it be an ironic statement of musical bombast? - but few disagree that it is an extraordinary achievement, rich with flamboyance, colour and pictorial drama.
