Apps: The Orchestra App
The Philharmonia Orchestra launched The Orchestra – an iPad app – in 2012. This collaborative project is a completely new and innovative way of introducing an audience to the inner workings of the modern orchestra.
The Orchestra is an extraordinary new app from Touchpress that will delight anyone with even a passing interest in classical music. Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra performing extended extracts from eight works representing three centuries of symphonic music. The app allows real-time selection of multiple video and audio tracks, along with an automatically synchronised score and dynamic graphical note-by-note visualisation of each piece as it is played. The result is an immersive environment for exploring the music and all the instruments of the orchestra.
The Orchestra undertook an incredibly long day of recording at Henry Wood Hall in London, playing 8 separate pieces over 9 hours of recording time, recorded by 10 cameras. Other layers of the app include Philharmonia players talking about their instruments as well as Principal Conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen and musicians from the Philharmonia providing commentary on each piece. All this provides the user with a unique insight into the world of the orchestral musician.
Some of the films within the app are also available in the 'Explore' section of the website.
