Schools: Concerts

Philharmonia Orchestra performs up to ten concerts each year specifically for schoolchildren. The concerts are typically presented in an entertaining but informative style by a music education specialist, introducing the orchestra, its instruments and repertoire interactively.

The Orchestra usually undertakes schools concerts in geographical areas in which it gives evening concerts for adults, and in places where this provision is not otherwise available, with the intention of allowing a broader range of people to hear the orchestra in format that is appropriately tailored.

Orchestra Unwrapped, held in Leicester, Basingstoke and Bedford, is a project offering a programme of live orchestral music to schoolchildren - often the first time they have ever heard a live orchestra.

Play On is a partnership between the Philharmonia and the music services of the London boroughs of Hounslow and Kingston, bringing children and Philharmonia players together in a range of educational performance-orientated projects.

MusicQuest is devised and run by the Philharmonia in partnership with The Prince's Foundation for Children & the Arts, which again introduces children to the possibilities of orchestral music.

Schools concerts are accompanied by related teacher training sessions and resources, providing ideas for creative, and often cross-curricular, classroom work inspired by the concert repertoire.
