Richard Waters No. 4 Viola

In addition to a busy performing schedule (across the UK and internationally) with the Philharmonia Orchestra, British violist Richard Waters enjoys a varied musical career.

As a principal player he has appeared with the London Sinfonietta, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orchestra of Opera North (where he held the position of Principal (No. 2) until the end of 2014.

From 2010-2012 Richard successfully ran the Essentially English Chamber Music Festival, bringing young and dynamic chamber musicians to his home area of Devon and Cornwall for an annual concert series. As a former founding member of the Bernadel Quartet he has played in some of the country’s major chamber music venues including the Wigmore Hall, Kings Place, St-Martin-in-the-Fields, St John Smith Square, Colston Hall and St James’ Piccadilly. 

A keen exponent of contemporary music Richard has worked with many leading composers such as John Adams and George Benjamin, whose virtuoso work Viola, Viola he has performed on numerous occasions including at the Southbank Centre’s Purcell Room as part of the composer’s 50th birthday celebrations. Most recently he performed it at St John Smith Square on the 29th January 2015 with Paul Silverthorne (former Principal Viola of the London Symphony Orchestra).
