Celebrated as one of the world’s greatest conductors, Vladimir Ashkenazy directs the Philharmonia in an unmissable programme of depth and passion. Glinka’s Overture to his opera based on Pushkin’s poem, Ruslan and Ludmila, glitters with memorable melodies and orchestral colour. The gifted young violinist Esther Yoo performs Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, taking us on a journey through the concerto’s thrilling opening, singing slow movement, and scintillating finale. The programme concludes with Elgar’s Enigma Variations, a series of witty portraits of the composer’s closest acquaintances, reaching profound emotional depths in the nobility of ‘Nimrod’.
