Tchaikovsky Fantasy Overture, The Tempest (Op. 18) (Burya)

Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 2

--interval--

Brahms Symphony No. 1

Step into spring with two lively pieces, ahead of Brahms’s first musical triumph.

The story behind Brahms’s First Symphony is not an easy one. After Beethoven’s death, Brahms was hailed by many as his successor, but Beethoven’s were not easy boots to fill. He spent many years reworking the piece before allowing its first performance – and it was an instant success.

Composed as both graduation showpiece and 19th birthday present for the Shostakovich’s son Maxim, the Piano Concerto No. 2 remains one of his best-loved works, featuring high-spirited, playful outer movements framing a slow movement brimming with tenderness.

But first, a rare treat: stormy, majestic and featuring one of Tchaikovsky’s most beautiful love themes, The Tempest brings the story of Shakespeare’s play to life.
