Watch archive stream of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony
This Easter, at a time when the Philharmonia Orchestra is not able to perform on stage due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we wanted to offer our audiences something in place of the concerts we would have been performing at Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall. So tune in at 7pm on Friday 10 April for a streamed concert from our archive. In fact, it’s almost exactly 50 years old.
2020 is our 75th anniversary, so tonight we thought we would take a step back in time to a special moment in the Philharmonia’s history when in 1970 our first Principal Conductor, Otto Klemperer, conducted a cycle of Beethoven Symphonies at the Royal Festival Hall.
Enjoy the Ninth Symphony, featuring soloists including mezzo soprano Janet Baker.
Watch live on YouTube (above) and Facebook (link to be released) on Friday 10 April, 7pm (GMT+1).
The film is taken from a new Blu-ray box set, produced in partnership with the Otto Klemperer Film Foundation. Licensed courtesy of BBC Studios.
