Esa-Pekka Salonen leads a performance of two symphonic masterpieces as the Philharmonia returns to Budapest.

First, Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony – and its iconic opening, beginning with arguably the best-known moment in classical music. But those four fateful notes underpin an extraordinary piece that offers drama, tragedy and an irresistible sense of adventure throughout.

To finish, a journey to the Finnish landscapes of Salonen’s compatriot Jean Sibelius. His Second Symphony offers warmth and emotion in equal measure, taking the listener on an heart-stopping adventure that culminates in one of the most spectacular finales ever written.
