Join us in celebration of the 90th birthday of one of the most significant composers of our times.
Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina’s music has captured minds across the world in a stellar 60-year career. Her works stand tall as some of the most expressive music of our times. Now celebrating her 90th birthday, we take to the stage in London’s Cadogan Hall for a performance of Fachwerk, her vibrant concerto for bayan, percussion and strings. A rarely-heard instrument in the UK, the bayan is a Russian accordion, played tonight by leading accordion virtuoso Geir Draugsvoll.
Framing Gubaidulina’s music, two works by her contemporaries: Lutoslawski’s Concerto for Orchestra captures the full range of sonorities a symphony orchestra can produce, while to open the concert we perform the UK premiere of a Serbian composer Isidora Žebeljan’s orchestral work The Horses of St Mark.
This concert is promoted by The International Centre for Contemporary Music
