Min Hee Lee

1st Violin

Born 1985 in South Korea, Min Hee Lee started to learn violin when she was five years old. Within two years she was already winning prizes in national competitions. When she was 12, Min Hee started to study at Sun Hwa Arts School in Seoul while also performing regularly as a soloist in concerts with such orchestras as the Vladivostok Symphony Orchestra. She is a graduate of Seoul Arts High School.

During her studies in Korea, Min Hee won many national competitions such as Segye Ilbo Magazine Competition, Goyang City Music Competition, Yejin Young Artist Competition, Sukmeong University Music Competition, and Yeo Joo University Music Competition. She also played recitals and concerts with Iwon Dream Tree Recitals, Goyang City Family Music Concerts, and Yejin Young Artist Festival.

In 2006, Min Hee relocated to Germany where she began her violin study at Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin where she studied under Stephan Picard and Sophia Jaffé. She also studied chamber music with her string quartet under Eberhard Feltz, and received a Masters in Chamber Music in 2014. From 2008 she studied at Berlin University of the Arts where she played under Nora Chastain and the Artemis String Quartet. In 2015 Min Hee obtained her Performer’s Diploma (Konzertexamen).

Min Hee has won many prizes since she moved to Germany, including the Ibolyka Gyarfas Violin competition in Berlin, International Königin Sophie Charlotte competition for violin, the Ottilie-Selbach-Redslob-Foundation prize, Lions prize and special prize of the conductor of Carl Flesch Academy, Yamaha scholarship prize, and international violin competition Rodolfo Lipizer. During this time she was funded by the Paul-Hindemith Organization Berlin and the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation Live Music Now in Berlin.

Min Hee performed as a soloist with orchestras such as the Baden-Baden Philharmonic (recorded on the Bella Musica label), Symphony Orchestra Neustadt, New Symphony Orchestra Berlin and the Lower Saxony Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Further recitals include performances at the Instrumental Museum Berlin, Korean Cultural Centre Berlin, Lunch Concert at Berlin Philharmonic, and C. Bechstein Centre Berlin. She has performed as a first violinist regularly in chamber music concerts across Europe, such as Ubeda Festival Spain, Israeli Tourney in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, Institut français in Berlin, Rheinsberg Music Festival, International Edvard-Grieg-Congress Berlin and Leipzig, Brandenburg Culture Sommer and Competition of ARD.

Min Hee has played in many masterclasses, under Rainer Kussmaul, Anna Chumachenko, Zachar Bron, Saschko Gawriloff, Pierre Amoyal, György Pauk, Ulf Hölscher, Valentin Erben, Gerhard Schulz, and Nora Chastain.

Before joining the Philharmonia, she gained orchestral experience with the Orchestra of Deutsche Oper Berlin, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester in Berlin, and Munich Chamber Orchestra.
