Dvořák Symphony No. 9, 'From the New World'
‘This was Beethoven the eternal modern and revolutionary in all his fire and glory…’ (The Guardian). In his decades-long career, Pierre-Laurent Aimard has earned a reputation as one of the most respected interpreters of Beethoven’s music. Tonight, he treats us to a performance of the Third Piano Concerto. The opening movement brims with intensity, followed by a serene slow movement packed with yearning melodies. Complete with a dance-filled finale, this is a true masterpiece.
Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 was inspired by the spirituals and folk music Dvořák heard while he was working in New York in the 1890s. The lullaby-like cor anglais melody of its slow movement is just one of many memorable moments in this mainstay of the orchestral repertoire.
