Elgar Serenade for Strings

Tavener The Protecting Veil

— Interval —

Beethoven Symphony No. 2

Poise, playfulness and sheer musical personality run through this sparkling afternoon.

Transcendent, otherworldly, and meditative: John Tavener’s The Protecting Veil was instantly hailed as a modern classic at its premiere 38 years ago, and in today’s concert, the very cellist who performed its premiere, joins the Philharmonia for this performance.

Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 completes the programme with generous melody, irrepressible energy and a sense of a composer striding confidently beyond Classical convention. As the cycle moves on, this concert reveals Beethoven at his most buoyant, framed by music of charm and surprise.
