Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 6, ‘Pathétique’

Transport yourself to the golden age of Hollywood with Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s Violin Concerto. Korngold made his name as one of the most influential film music composers of all time. His Violin Concerto borrows music from several of his film scores. Tonight it is in the hands of Gramophone’s 2022 Young Artist of the Year: Swedish-Norwegian virtuoso, Johan Dalene.

Opening the concert is Mozart’s overture to his opera The Abduction from the Seraglio. A testament to the strength and determination of love, the music is full of zeal and drama.

Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique Symphony closes our 2024/25 season at The Marlowe. Entitled “the passionate symphony” by the composer – and passionate it is – Tchaikovsky’s mighty symphony is the work of a composer at the top of his game. He gives us blazing brass, lyrical woodwind and heartfelt strings. Overturning the conventions of his day, he ends his final symphony with a devastating descent into silence.
