Come along after hours, or stay behind after our 7.30pm concert of Marsalis, Ellington and Gershwin, to hear the free debut performance of the Philharmonia Big Band.

This late-night show starts with a swing – first, Roll ‘Em, by Mary Lou Williams, then, Swinging the Blues, a Kansas City classic that launched the Basie Band to fame. Watch out for our Principal Conductor Santtu on drums as the piece runs through riffs and hot solos, before a big drum kit climax.

Take the A Train follows – only just saved from the cutting room floor in 1941, when Duke Ellington needed a last-minute programme for a radio show, this express ride soon took its place in history as his band’s theme tune. There are Latin rhythms and dance melodies to get your toes tapping, and finally, Glenn Miller’s instantly recognisable In the Mood to send you home with a smile.
