Programme
Joy Linsey String Quartet 'C’est L’extase'
Brahms String Sextet no.1 in B flat Major, Op.18
In this 45-minute chamber concert, the Philharmonia Chamber Players marry the warm, central European influences of Brahms with a contemporary work by Joy Linsey.
From its broad, embracing opening, Brahms’s luscious sextet unfolds as a deeply lyrical work, though a sadness lurks beneath its lush textures. At times as forceful as it is wistful, the Hungarian-inspired melodies and tunes of its middle movements sway the listener. In this concert, Brahms is preceded by Joy Linsey’s C’est L’extase. Taking its title from Paul Verlaine’s deeply dreamy poem, it is an intimate portrayal of euphoria and languid peace.
Pop in just for this 45-minute concert, or stay to hear the Philharmonia perform a Czech-inspired programme with violinist James Ehnes’s performance of Dvořák’s violin concerto, conducted by Kevin John Edusei at 7.30pm (separate ticket required).
