Philharmonia Orchestra announces first half of 2024/25 London Season

The Philharmonia announces the first half of its 2024/25 London Season, under Principal Conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali featuring Nordic Soundscapes series.

Key highlights:

  • In Santtu-Matias Rouvali’s fourth season as Principal Conductor, the Philharmonia will focus on Santtu’s love of nature and the influence it has on music. Exploring the relationship between music, nature and the climate crisis from a Nordic perspective, Nordic Soundscapes (26 Sep – 10 Nov) features the music of Sibelius, Grieg and Nielsen alongside 7 UK premieres from contemporary Nordic composers. The series also includes four free Notes on Nature discussions that will delve to the themes of the series. A Nordic Soundscapes Pass is available for purchase to ensure excellent value for money and great seats for every London event in the series.
  • Throughout the opening weekend, the Philharmonia returns to its focus on digital innovation, presenting a free Virtual Orchestra – Sibelius virtual reality experience, giving the viewer the opportunity to experience what it’s like to sit right in the middle of the orchestra during a performance.
  • Principal Conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali opens the London season with pianist Stephen Hough and the Ylioppilaskunnan Laulajat Male Voice Choir in an exhilarating programme of Sibelius and Grieg, including a rare chance to hear Sibelius’s Kullervo.
  • Three new commissions, by Nordic composers Miho Hazama, Outi Tarkiainen, and Mats Larsson Gothe receive their UK premieres with the backdrop of underwater films by Swedish environmentalist Joakim Odelberg depicting the impact of humans on fragile marine ecosystems. These commissions premiered in Gothenburg this year as part of Nordic – A Fragile Hope with Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.
  • New Featured Artist, violinist Nemanja Radulović, joins the Philharmonia to perform Khachaturian’s Violin Concerto and Principal Guest Conductor Marin Alsop conducts Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No.5 alongside songs by Alma Mahler.
