Rachmaninov: Symphony No. 3 & Symphonic Dances

Marking the orchestra’s latest collaboration with their conductor laureate Vladimir Ashkenazy, the Philharmonia returns to disc with a leading live performance of two late works by Rachmaninov – the Third Symphony and the Symphonic Dances. This release is third and final in a new series of Rachmaninov’s symphonic works, conducted by Ashkenazy in live performances at London’s Royal Festival Hall with the Philharmonia Orchestra.

“Alongside Ashkenazy’s instinctive authority in Rachmaninov is his rapport with the Philharmonia, which follows him wherever he leads; the Philharmonia’s playing here is outstanding.

“…Vladimir Ashkenazy showing his mastery of the ebb and flow of Rachmaninov’s large orchestral canvases throughout this powerful concert performance with the Philharmonia, which plays with exemplary passion and precision… It makes an excellent finish to this live Rachmaninov Rachmaninov series with the Philharmonia.”
Andrew MacGregor, BBC Radio 3, Record Review, October 2018

“Ashkenazy coaxes rich, multi-coloured playing from a Philharmonia at white heat, and the live recording captures the frisson of the occasion. The symphony is done with great love and the Dances, almost another symphony in their ambition and spirit, are fabulously played.”

“The Philharmonia is on terrific form, playing with edge and sensitivity, splendour and force, ardour and agility – as befits any particular moment in this wonderful piece, desert-island Rachmaninov for me.”
