Schubert: Symphony No. 9
SIGCD133 | August 2008 release
Schubert’s 9th Symphony is known as ‘The Great’, partly to distinguish it from his other symphony in the same key, and partly because in it he set out to compose a ‘grand’ symphony on the scale of Beethoven’s recent works.
The work is full of the melodic inventiveness for which Schubert is so well known. This recording is conducted by the Philharmonia’s former Principal Guest Conductor Sir Charles Mackerras.
