Dvořák Symphony No. 9, 'From the New World'

Our exploration of American music culminates in Dvořák’s ever-popular ‘New World’ symphony – inspired by the spirituals and folk music Dvořák heard while he was working in New York in the 1890s.

William Grant Still’s 1930 First Symphony is an audience favourite in the US. Threaded through with the sounds of the Blues, ragtime and jazz, the work ends in a triumphant hymn of hope.

Julia Bullock, one of our Featured Artists this season, is known for her intense, authentic performances and commanding stage presence. She sings Barber’s Knoxville, conjuring up a childhood in a small Southern town with Bluesy themes and flexible rhythms.
