Programme

Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 5, 'Emperor'

— Interval —

Beethoven Symphony No. 9

Beethoven’s “Choral” Symphony is one of the composer’s best-loved works. A feat of Western classical music, the symphony – including the beloved Ode to Joy chorus – remains one of the most important works in the canon.

We open with Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5. With its grandiose opening, lyrical second movement and playful finale, it is in the hands of the “mercurially brilliant” (The Strad) soloist Tom Poster.

Unfortunately Holly Mathieson is unwell, and will be unable to conduct Saturday’s Royal Albert Hall concert. We are grateful to Christopher Warren-Green for stepping in.
