Programme

Wolfe Fire in my Mouth (London premiere)

The London premiere of a powerful multimedia elegy honouring the victims of New York’s 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire.

Trailblazing Principal Guest Conductor Marin Alsop joins the Philharmonia Orchestra for Julia Wolfe’s Fire in my Mouth, a searing work of remembrance and protest.

Set against the rise of the workers’ movement, the piece commemorates the deadliest industrial disaster in New York’s history. In the 1911 fire, 146 garment workers, mostly young women from immigrant communities, lost their lives. Each victim is given a voice through the choir, while Yiddish and Italian folk songs, factory sounds and the terror of the inferno combine to create a haunting, unforgettable soundscape.
