Programme
R Strauss Der Rosenkavalier
All the comedy, romance and bittersweet moments of young love are distilled into one tale of intrigue in Strauss’s best-loved opera.
The blissful relationship of the lovers Octavian and The Marschallin is interrupted one morning by the arrival of the lecherous Baron Ochs, bragging about amorous conquests and his engagement to the young Sophie von Faninal.
What follows has all the hallmarks of a traditional opera comedy – filled with love triangles, mistaken identity, and plenty of comeuppances. But through Strauss’s masterly music, the story gains nuance: characters muse on ageing and loneliness, glorious melodies become tinged with sadness.
We take on Strauss’s masterpiece in its first ever staging at Garsington Opera, featuring the debut of conductor Jordan de Souza. Our cast features Miah Persson as Marschallin, joined by Hanna Hipp as Octavian and Derrick Ballard as Ochs.
