Marin Alsop conducting the Philharmonia at Royal Festival Hall

Artists

Marin Alsop – conductor
Jeneba Kanneh-Mason – piano

Programme

Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 2

— Interval —

Shostakovich Symphony No. 10

The Philharmonia’s Principal Guest Conductor – the inimitable Marin Alsop – performs with us in Canterbury for the first time.

A piano part with more memorable melodies than many composers write in a lifetime, Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto is arguably the most popular in classical music history. Jeneba Kanneh-Mason made her Philharmonia debut with the piece in 2022, a performance in which she was praised for her ‘poetry and confidence’ (The Guardian). She returns tonight to win the hearts of our audience in Canterbury.

Shostakovich’s epic Symphony No. 10 completes the programme. Rumoured to contain a musical depiction of Stalin, this symphony certainly speaks of darkness and fear. But Shostakovich also wove in a motif whose notes represent his own name – the individual standing up against oppression, humanity and creativity defiant and unvanquished.

About

Open rehearsals are not performances. Playing may be paused at various intervals in order for the conductor, soloist and orchestra to agree on specific styles and dynamics.

Open rehearsals will take place in the auditorium where the concert is due to be performed, unless otherwise specified. Times and repertoire being rehearsed will be confirmed prior to the rehearsal date, as these schedules are subject to change.

Please note that open rehearsals are working processes for the conductor and the Orchestra, we cannot guarantee that pieces will be played in their entirety. Timings are subject to change and every endeavour will be made to let ticket holders know in advance about any such changes. Please check our website for up-to-date information.
