Programme

Mahler Symphony No. 3 Listen

Where to begin with getting to know a six-movement piece 100 minutes long, and calling on 100 orchestral musicians, a solo singer and two choirs?

Mahler himself provided a guide – it’s clear from his original movement titles that he wanted his music to embrace nature, humanity and divine love. But we’d perhaps do best to heed his advice: “You just have to bring along ears and a heart, and – not least – willingly surrender.”

Leading the orchestra, singers and listeners into Mahler’s rich and compelling musical world is Grammy Award-winning conductor Paavo Järvi, a longstanding and hugely respected collaborator with the Orchestra. Soloist Hongni Wu is a graduate of the Royal Opera’s Jette Parker Young Artists Programme, acclaimed for the “youthful bloom and richness” of her voice (The New York Times).
