— Interval —

Prokofiev Romeo and Juliet (excerpts)

Marin Alsop, the Philharmonia’s Principal Guest Conductor, and violinist María Dueñas tour the Spanish peninsula and Canary Islands to kickstart a year of exciting international concerts.

María Dueñas is one of the world’s most exciting young violinists, rising to fame after winning Menuhin Competition in 2021. She joins the Orchestra on tour as soloist in Korngold’s dazzling Violin Concerto. A composer known as one of the most influential film music composers of all time, Korngold’s concerto borrows music from several of his film scores.

Marin Alsop has chosen a selection of highlights from Prokofiev’s ballet, Romeo and Juliet, to close the concerts. And opening our concerts is Jessie Montgomery’s Strum: an opportunity for the Philharmonia’s world-class string section to show off their skills.
