Programme

Vaughan Williams Dona nobis pacem

— Interval —

Rachmaninov Symphonic Dances

Poulenc Gloria

The Philharmonia Orchestra and Barts Choir join forces to bring to light works created in the shadow of the Second World War, on the eve of the 75th anniversary of its end.

In an evening of strong contrast, experience Vaughan Williams’s Dona nobis pacem, his powerful rejection to the horror of war, set to the words of Walt Whitman’s poem Beat! Beat! Drums!.

In the second half, Rachmaninov’s richly varied Symphonic Dances are filled with moments of beauty, including a haunting solo saxophone melody at the heart of the first movement. To finish, a heartfelt journey through brass-filled majesty, urgent choral moments and a delicate, serene ending as Poulenc’s dramatic Gloria completes the programme.
