Programme

Bax Quintet for Harp and Strings

R. Murray Schafer Theseus for Harp and String Quartet

Enjoy a free 45-minute performance by our talented Philharmonia Chamber Players and programmed by our Principal Harp, Heidi Krutzen.

In his long career, R. Murray Schafer composed several works with a prominent role for the harp. Their dramatic, descriptive nature and coloristic approach gives them considerable appeal, and his Theseus for Harp and String Quartet is no exception.

But first, enjoy Bax’s Quintet for Harp and Strings, composed in the wake of the First World War. At times dark and disturbing, it is nevertheless underscored by a rich, lyrical beauty that is almost evanescent, culminating in a delicate pianissimo of muted strings.
