Mussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition

We return to the BBC Proms with our Principal Conductor and stellar pianist Bruce Liu, who makes his Proms debut in Tchaikovsky’s rarely performed masterpiece, his Second Piano Concerto.

Opening the concert is music by Gabriela Ortiz, the Philharmonia’s Featured Composer in the 2025/26 season. Take a visit to Mexico City’s cabarets and dance halls in Antrópolis, a vivid homage to urban nightlife.

Mussorgsky’s best-loved work – Pictures at an Exhibition – crowns this evening’s programme. It’s a musical promenade around an exhibition of paintings and designs by the composer’s friend Viktor Hartmann, encompassing country scenes, characters from Russian legend and the imposing Great Gate of Kyiv.
