Vaughan Williams Five Variants of Dives & Lazarus

Dvořák Cello Concerto

— Interval —

Brahms Symphony No. 1

The programme begins with Vaughan Williams’s Five Variants of Dives & Lazarus, reflecting the composer’s great love of English folk tunes. American cellist Rainer Crosett is the soloist in Dvořák’s ardent Cello Concerto, one of the best-loved works for the instrument. Brahms’s First Symphony is a monumental work continuing the symphonic tradition of Beethoven, but also showing the distinctive lyricism of Brahms.
