Elgar Enigma Variations
Our Principal Conductor joins forces with cellist Jan Vogler for a programme of Liszt, Clyne and Elgar.
Anna Clyne was the Philharmonia’s Featured Composer in the 2022/23 season. Tonight, the Orchestra performs DANCE, her concerto for cello and orchestra. Taking inspiration from the words of 13th-century poet Rumi, we hear the deeply moving work in the hands of award-winning cellist Jan Vogler.
Elgar’s Enigma Variations, a tribute to his closest friends, closes the programme. From the tender grace of the first variation, to the solemn grandeur of ‘Nimrod’, this is the work that launched Elgar on the road to his status as a national treasure.
First, enjoy the drama of Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2.
