Programme
Sibelius Lemminkaïnen Suite: Lemminkaïnen’s Return
Prokofiev Violin Concerto No. 1
— Interval —
Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5
Esther Yoo continues her close relationship with the Philharmonia in a performance of Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 1.
In concert and in the recording studio, Esther Yoo has developed a strong bond with the Orchestra, resulting in a recording of the Tchaikovsky Concerto in which “Her dark, aristocratic tone is treasurable” (Gramophone). In this concert, Yoo turns her attention to a later Russian work, written on the brink of the Revolution: Prokofiev’s First Violin Concerto. This is a piece that turns convention upside down, with lyrical outer movements framing a satirical scherzo.
Emilia Hoving conducts the Philharmonia in Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, in which the composer grapples with Fate on a journey from darkness to light, and in exhilarating music by Sibelius – who was deeply influenced by Tchaikovsky – charting the adventures of a Finnish philanderer, Lemminkäinen.
