Leonidas Kavakos: Mendelssohn, Brahms and Dvořák
Leonidas Kavakos leads the Philharmonia as both soloist and conductor in a programme full of sunshine.
Kavakos is one of today’s most admired and respected musicians. He is known not only as an exceptional violinist, but also as an advocate for music education and the art of violin-making, and increasingly in recent years, as a conductor.
He begins with Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, a work brimming with memorable melodies that well deserves its place as an audience favourite. Next he swaps his bow for a baton for Brahms’s Variations on a Theme by Haydn. The stately theme appears in many guises, now mysterious, now graceful, now dramatic. Its transformations are a testament to Brahms’s skill and creativity and to the versatility of the orchestra.
The sound of birdsong ripples through Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8, and its third movement is a delightful waltz. It’s been described as ’35 minutes of life-enhancing joy’ (The Guardian) – what better way to bring a taste of summer to a November afternoon?
