Borodin Symphony No. 2

Santtu conducts the Philharmonia in Manchester for the first time since becoming our Principal Conductor – joined by one of today’s most exciting young pianists.

Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto is a milestone in romantic music, its heroic opening known and loved far beyond the concert hall. Frank Dupree, fast making his name as one of the most exciting and versatile soloists working today, joins as soloist.

Tchaikovsky’s masterwork is the centrepiece of a concert bookended by music from two members of the so-called Mighty Five school of Russian romantics. We open with Rimsky-Korsakov’s elegant Iberian travelogue. Closing the programme is Borodin’s Second Symphony, a compelling homage to the history and heritage of his homeland.
