Programme

Verdi Requiem Listen

We’re joined by a starry line-up of soloists in Verdi’s roof-raising Requiem.

Verdi poured all his expertise in depicting human emotion into this choral masterpiece. There is violence in the ‘Dies Irae’ movement, and grandeur in the ‘Tuba Mirum’, heralded by eight trumpets. Joyful praise resounds in the ‘Sanctus’, and the ‘Agnus Dei’ opens with a spine-tingling unaccompanied duet for the soprano and mezzo soloists.

Our Principal Conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali takes the helm to open the Philharmonia’s season with this landmark of 19th-century music.

This performance was originally advertised with Natalya Romaniw as the soprano soloist. We’re delighted that she is expecting a baby later in the autumn. For reasons relating to her pregnancy, she has reluctantly had to withdraw. We are extremely grateful to Susanne Bernhard for stepping at short notice. Due to ill-health, Christoph Fischesser is also unable to perform. We are extremely grateful to Tareq Nazmi for stepping in at short notice.

About

Open Rehearsals are not performances. Playing may be paused at various intervals in order for the conductor, soloist and orchestra to agree on specific styles and dynamics.

Open Rehearsals are working processes for the conductor and the Orchestra. Times and repertoire being rehearsed will be confirmed prior to the rehearsal date, as these schedules are subject to change. Please check our website for up-to-date information.
