Programme

Mendelssohn String Quintet No. 1 Listen

Britten Phantasy Quartet Op. 2 Listen

Early works by two masters of their craft rub shoulders in this free evening with the Philharmonia Chamber Players.

Written when he was just 17, Mendelssohn’s String Quintet showcases a composer already at the height of his skills. Fiery virtuosity and memorable melodies stand out from a luxurious sound-world that envelops the listener like a warm embrace. It’s a chance to hear the Philharmonia’s celebrated rich string sound in a more intimate setting.

From one young prodigy to another – Britten wrote his Phantasy Quartet when he was 18. The piece takes us on a journey out of silence and back again, through a brooding, uncertain landscape coloured by the expressive sound of the solo oboe.
