Enjoy a free performance of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio from members of the orchestra.
Tchaikovsky composed his Piano Trio (a piece of chamber music for violin, cello and piano) in memory of his friend and mentor Nikolai Rubinstein. Rubinstein was a multitalented musician – composer, conductor and pianist. Tchaikovsky honoured him with a work that demands huge technical skill as well as emotional expression from all three players, but especially the pianist. The piece is in two large scale sections: an elegiac first movement and a virtuosic set of variations ending with a heartbroken funeral march.
