Mahler Symphony No. 8
“Imagine that the universe begins to ring and resound, no longer with human voices but with revolving planets and suns.” Gustav Mahler, 1906
The Philharmonia Orchestra and The Bach Choir join forces for one of the largest and greatest choral masterpieces in the orchestral world.
Many composers have had grand visions whilst in the throes of inspiration – but those who realise them are truly rare. In the summer of 1906, Mahler experienced an intense burst of creativity whilst writing his 8th Symphony. In his own words, he “saw the whole piece immediately… and only needed to write it down, as though it were being dictated”. Whoever was leading Mahler was inspired – the result is still celebrated today as one of the most expansive and ambitious works in the repertoire.
Experience Mahler’s ‘Symphony of a Thousand’ in the inspiring settings of St Paul’s Cathedral in London.
