Holst The Planets
Christopher Warren-Green conducts the Philharmonia in an evening of orchestral favourites.
Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 is one of the most popular piano concertos in classical music history, and it’s not difficult to see why. In this performance, we’re joined by stellar British pianist, Clare Hammond.
Then comes Holst’s infamous suite, The Planets. From the violence of ‘Mars, the Bringer of War’ to the ethereal voices of ‘Neptune, the Mystic’ (via ‘Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity’, whose melody is more familiar to rugby fans as World in Union) Holst gives us a masterclass in how music can conjure up different moods and characters.
Opening the concert is the overture from Verdi’s powerful opera, La Forza del Destino.
