Two pieces by Vaughan Williams opens this concert. Five Mystical Songs, a setting of George Herbert’s poems, is paired with the glorious Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, which premiered at the Three Choirs Festival in 1910. Closing the programme is Graham Fitkin’s The Age of Aspiration, a musical exploration of the Cornish chemist Humphrey Davy’s work, and the philosophy and culture of the time.
