Mozart Sinfonia Concertante for Violin, Viola and Orchestra

— Interval —

Bach arr. O'Neill Goldberg Variations

We return to the Wimbledon International Music Festival with three jewels of classical music.

Music by Mozart’s contemporary, Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, opens this evening’s performance. The first classical composer of African ancestry, his playful Symphony No. 1 is a musical treat filled with charm and humour.

Mozart’s spritely Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola is a master of invention, full of glorious melodies that beautifully weave their way from one soloist to the next. A joyful exploration of the blend of these instruments, today it is in the hands of former Philharmonia Concertmaster Benjamin Marquise Gilmore and former Principal Violist Yukiko Ogura.

Closing the programme is Bach’s Goldberg Variations, arranged for orchestra by conductor and Philharmonia Principal Bassoon, Robin O’Neill.
