Sir Howard Davies named next Chair of the Board for the Philharmonia Orchestra

The Philharmonia Orchestra has today announced that Sir Howard Davies has been appointed as the next Chair of the Board. Following an extensive public recruitment process Davies will take over from the current chair Lord King of Lothbury on 1 January 2026 when his term concludes.

Davies has had a significant career in finance and industry, serving most recently as Chair of NatWest Group, and previously as Director of the London School of Economics, Deputy Governor of the Bank of England and Chairman of the Financial Services Authority.

He also has extensive experience in the arts, having served on the Board of the Royal Academy of Music, as a Trustee of the Tate for nearly a decade – including a period as
interim Chair – and as a Trustee of the National Theatre. From 2015 to 2023, he was also Chair of the London Library.

Sir Howard Davies, incoming Chair of the Board, Philharmonia Orchestra said: “I am thrilled to take over from Mervyn King at the helm of an excellent and flourishing orchestra, and hope to contribute to its further development”.
