Haydn, Schubert & Mozart with Lise de la Salle
Artists
Andrew Manze – conductor
Lise de la Salle – piano
Programme
Haydn Piano Concerto in D, Hob.XVIII/11
Schubert Symphony No. 8, 'Unfinished'
— Interval —
Mozart Piano Concerto No. 23 in A, K. 488
Enjoy an evening of Classical masterpieces, featuring two of the finest piano concertos of the late 1700s. Haydn’s concerto, the epitome of Classical elegance and expression, ends with a lively Hungarian-style finale. Mozart’s explores deeper emotional territory, with a slow movement full of tender yearning at its heart.
The soloist is Lise de la Salle, whose playing inspired a Washington Post critic to write, “For much of the concert, the audience had to remember to breathe… the exhilaration didn’t let up for a second until her hands came off the keyboard.”
Between the two, Andrew Manze conducts the two surviving movements of Schubert’s tantalizingly unfinished Symphony No. 8. A critic at its premiere gave this irresistible description: ‘a sweet stream of melodies… so crystal-clear that you can see every pebble on the bottom. And everywhere the same warmth, the same golden sunshine that makes buds grow!’
Manze, widely celebrated as one of the most stimulating and inspirational conductors of his generation, conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra for the first time.
This concert was originally advertised with Sir András Schiff play-directing, and with Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 24 rather than No. 23. Unfortunately he has broken his leg and is unable to perform. We are grateful to Lise de la Salle and Andrew Manze for stepping in, and wish Sir András Schiff a speedy recovery.
