Brahms String Sextet No. 1 in B flat, Op. 18

Immerse yourself in the luscious sound of music for string ensemble played by our Featured Artist Sheku Kanneh-Mason, who is also a Southbank Centre Resident Artist, and members of the Philharmonia Orchestra.

This delicious hour of Bach and Brahms begins with arrangements of three Bach chorale-preludes that Kanneh-Mason himself has made.

These beautifully meditative miniatures transfer the resonances of their original instrument, the organ, to the sustained and songful lines of cello ensemble. They are an ideal choice to match the rich tone and interweaving strands of Brahms’s String Sextet No.1, for two violins, two violas and two cellos.

It’s no wonder that this Sextet is such a perennial favourite in string ensemble concerts, as Brahms truly lets rip in an outpouring of generous, impassioned expression.
