Mellow and lyrical, or melancholy and full of longing? What you hear in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 27 depends partly on whether you think he sensed it would be his last. Whichever way you listen to it, its apparently effortless beauty cannot be denied. Paul Lewis’s ‘unforced lyricism [and] understated refinement’ (The Guardian) – and the fact that he decided to make the most of the last year’s lockdowns by delving deeper into Mozart’s piano music – make him an ideal soloist for this intimate masterpiece.
Such is the stature of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony – in the popular imagination as much as in the history of Western classical music – that a Philharmonia recording of the first movement is on the golden record carried by the Voyager spacecraft, launched in 1977 and currently in interstellar space. It’s hard for us to imagine the impact it must have had on its first performance. American conductor Ryan Bancroft joins the Philharmonia for the first time, to conjure up the experience described by a contemporary critic, ‘where grief and joy embrace [the listener] in the form of sound’.
