Santtu-Matias Rouvali – conductor
Anu Komsi – soprano
Programme
Berlioz Les nuits d’été
Mahler Symphony No. 4
How does a conductor communicate their interpretation of a piece with an orchestra and the soloist as they prepare for a performance?
Our Open Rehearsals give you access to this creative process and allow you to see the Philharmonia at work. Learn more about the pieces and start to listen to your favourites with a fresh pair of ears.
In this rehearsal we see Mahler’ sometimes joyful, sometimes restless Symphony No. 4, which reflects his philosophy that “a symphony must be like the world, it must contain everything”. The work ends with a serene soprano solo describing the music of the angels – a child’s vision of heaven.
Anu Komsi is acclaimed for her ‘fearlessly communicative and utterly compelling’ performances (The Guardian), and she brings that passion and commitment to Berlioz’s exquisite Les nuits d’été. These six songs take us on a journey through burgeoning hope, love and loss and, in the final song, a renewed sense of anticipation at what the future might hold.
This performance was originally advertised with singer Julia Bullock. Unfortunately she is unwell and regrets that she is unable to perform. We are grateful to Anu Komsi for stepping in at short notice.

About
Open Rehearsals are not performances. Playing may be paused at various intervals in order for the conductor, soloist and orchestra to agree on specific styles and dynamics.
Open rehearsals will take place in the auditorium where the concert is due to be performed, unless otherwise specified. Times and repertoire being rehearsed will be confirmed prior to the rehearsal date, as these schedules are subject to change.
Please note that open rehearsals are working processes for the conductor and the Orchestra. Timings are subject to change and every endeavour will be made to let ticket holders know in advance about any such changes. Please check our website for up-to-date information.
