Haydn String Quartet Op.20, No. 6
Janáček String Quartet No.2 Intimate Letters
In our first Philharmonia Chamber Players concert of the season, our Philharmonia musicians perform a free 45- minute programme of string quartets.
Haydn’s quartets are considered a milestone in the history of composition. He defined the medium, and undoubtedly influenced Janáček's second string quartet, composed over 150 years later. Referred to as his "manifesto on love", Janáček's String Quartet No. 2, Intimate Letters, depicts his relationship with Kamila Stösslová – the two exchanged over 700 letters.
Haydn's influences on the other hand drew more from the philosophical and political. As new, radical ideas swept across Europe at the end of the eighteenth century, they affected the emotional compositional style of Haydn’s quartets, including his String Quartet Op.20, No. 6.
